A growing number of riders in downtown Tampa are turning to a more affordable and environmentally friendly microtransit, designed to make short trips more efficient and eco-friendly.
DASH launched in 2023 and the program has logged more than 100,000 riders since February 2026. The service operates across several downtown neighborhoods, offering low-cost transportation options without surging prices.
This public transportation option functions through a hub-to-hub model pairing passengers traveling in similar directions. This ride share option takes more vehicles off the roads.
Technology plays a central role in the program's growth. The program utilizes Tesla Model Y vehicles.
“Their smart vehicles, they are sustainable. These are sustainable battery operated vehicles, this means zero emissions,” said Kenyetta Hairston-Bridges the CEO and President of Tampa Downtown Partnership
Right now, there are about five vehicles and the program is looking to add more to further their growth.
According to Tesla's website the Model Y costs less to charge than a gas vehicle, has no maintenance other than refill washer fluid and rotate tires and fewer parts to replace. Teslas have 20 moving parts compared to a car engine with over 1,000.
Beyond environmental benefits, the service focuses on improving accessibility and being “predictable.” Some of the connecting key neighborhoods include Water Street, Tampa Heights, Channelside and the River Arts District. DASH helps residents, workers and visitors explore businesses and restaurants without relying on personal transportation downtown.
“DASH is the best practice model. People across the country have called us to ask about how we’ve launched DASH, how DASH is performing as a model for their community,” Hairston-Bridges said.
To use DASH, travelers will download the app and select the HUB they are at and which HUB they want to go to. It costs $2 a person and each vehicle has a driver ambassador, who not only drives but acts as a tour guide and provides extra eyes for the police department.
Hours of operation include Sunday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday is 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.
“We’ve always believed that investing in mobility really invests in the economic vitality of Tampa’s downtown,” said Hairston-Bridges. “It’s really important for us to make sure that we’re providing viable options for people.”
