Kroger to buy Giant Eagle

Kroger will buy the supermarket chain Giant Eagle for $1.65 billion, the company announced on Wednesday, July 1.

Giant Eagle is a regional supermarket chain with 197 stores located in Indiana, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. Kroger is a corporation with numerous supermarket and department store chains located throughout much of the United States. Kroger presently operates more than 2,700 store locations.

Kroger CEO Greg Foran called the acquisition strategic, and said that the chain was a "fit" for the company.

"Giant Eagle is a well-run, high-quality regional grocer with a strong reputation for fresh products, pharmacy, private label and customer loyalty," said Foran. "Giant Eagle expands our reach into ‌attractive adjacent markets, allowing us to do what we do best: Run outstanding stores, deliver fresh foods and convenient meal solutions at affordable prices, and take care of our customers and associates every single day."

A message on Giant Eagle's website explains that while the chain is being acquired by Kroger, the name "Giant Eagle" will remain.

Giant Eagle has entered into an agreement to be acquired by The Kroger Company. As part of Kroger, Giant Eagle will retain our name and our commitment to serving our customers as we always have – with the same familiar supermarkets and pharmacies, high-quality products and services, and dedicated Team Members. 

The deal is expected to close in 2027.
